Christian Home School Curriculum

Christian Home Schooling has been around for a very long time, as early as the Pilgrims in the first settlements and the days of covered wagons and the long treks across America's mountains and plains from the East Coast to the West. Parents have been raising their children using the principles of their religion and faith. These Christian families were looking to fulfill their dreams and inspire their children to follow their faith and embedding their value system in their children along with teaching them the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. While the 3 R's were important, so too was the education in their religion and faith and many studies in early times included an hour or two on studying the Bible, Koran or other book of faith.

There were not issues then concerning separation of church and state and there was never a question in early schools continuing to carry the religious messages of the faith of the local community. As people moved West and the communities grew with people of all different religions, the teaching of religions became one that created the need for private schools with a religious faith as a cornerstone of its Christian home school curriculum. Today, while there are many private schools for almost every faith that there are around the world, home school curriculum for a faith is rather old as well since state education boards have certified Christian home schooling for several decades in the United States.

One of the benefits of Christian home school is that there can be any number of subjects that can be integrated into Christian-based subjects when adding the Christian faith to a Christian home school curriculum. First, the home schooling curriculum must be designed to also meet the requirements set by the various states home schooling guidelines and standards. To do this takes some research on the part of parents. Before you get too far into the research, it should be determined early on who will be the teacher or teachers. Whether it is one or both parents, other family members or friends, or hiring a teacher, they need to be in on the planning stages to ensure they know the standards you are setting for them and your children and they must also know enough about the Christian home schooling subjects that you want taught for your children.

The next is to write down all the requirements for the state standards in each subject area your children are required to be instructed in and start to match them up with general subjects and what needs to be taught. At a minimum, almost every grade has language arts or English, writing and arithmetic along with sciences, history, and earth and social sciences. Either each of these need lesson plans written or there are many organizations that provide lesson plans and subject learning materials for Christian home school curriculum. However, you must make sure the lesson plans and subject material satisfy state requirements for the grade-level of your child.

After lesson plans are written or obtained and scheduling has been done on who is teaching and the times "class" will be held, you also want to make sure that there is some time blocked in for Christian home school based subject material and times. Some of the subjects are easy in integrating Christian-based understanding and guidelines and still meet the state requirements. However, some studies do not lend themselves to Christian-based instruction of subject matter and will have to be taught in a general studies method. But, in the end, parents should feel a good deal of confidence and being very proud of their children in successfully completing a Christian home school curriculum program that instills the values of the parents that are based on the Christian values of the family and community.
